The university was shut down on May 30 after a protest by the students over the suspension of their union for alleged acts of insubordination.
But the chairman of the Lagos chapter of the university’s alumni association, Shina Odugbemi, on Wednesday told PREMIUM TIMES that considerable progress had been made in resolving the issues involved in the dispute between the management and the students.
Mr. Odugbemi who presided over a meeting on Tuesday attended by officials of the university and the students’ leaders, said the crisis was not unusual and would be resolved soon.
“The crisis is not unusual, what is unusual is to have a protracted and unsolvable situation, but solutions have been provided to solve this.
“After speaking with the school management and the students, we came
out joyfully hoping that in a few days, activities will come back to normal in the school.”
He said other stakeholders had also intervened to ensure quick reopening of the school.
“I am aware that ASUU is also part of the effort to bring peace to the campus. I am also aware that other associations, especially campus associations like NASU, key leaders in the society and the alumni of the school in the diaspora are working on how peace can be restored.”

Efforts made by PREMIUM TIMES to confirm the development from the chairman of the Ibadan chapter of ASUU, Deji Omole, were not successful.
The university’s spokesman, Olatunji Oladejo, also said he could not speak with our reporter because he was at the crucial meeting.
But the students union president, Ojo Aderemi, confirmed that stakeholders had intervened.
Earlier on Tuesday, in a press statement he made available to PREMIUM TIMES, Mr. Aderemi denied that he publicly insulted the Vice-Chancellor, Idowu Olayinka, one of the reasons said to have led to the suspension of the students’ union.
The management had also announced the postponement of the second semester examination to July 17.
